In 1983, Susan joined Catherine Deneuve in the 1983 cult classic “The Hunger,” wherein a graphic lesbian love scene between the two actresses became the first mainstream film to feature such a scene. Sarandon’s breakthrough role was “Annie Savoy” in the 1988 romantic comedy “Bull Durham,” alongside Kevin Costner and Tim Robbins. Since then, Susan Sarandon continued to accept award-winning projects. She has received five Academy Award nominations for her work in the 1981 “Atlantic City,” 1991 “Thelma and Louise,” 1992 drama “Lorenzo’s Oil,” the 1994 legal thriller “The Client” and “Dead Man Walking.” In 1995, Sarandon won an Academy Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Actress from her work in ‘Dead Man Walking’ as well as a BAFTA award for ‘Best Actress in a Leading Role’ for her role in “The Client.”
Aside from drama films, Susan Sarandon has also made several successful comedy flicks, including the comedy-drama film “Stepmom” in 1998, “The Banger Sisters” in 2002 as well as “Romance & Cigarettes” and “Elizabethtown” – both released in 2005. Susan’s other notable films include “Anywhere but Here” with Natalie Portman, “Cradle Will Rock” alongside Hank Azara and John Cusack, “Shall We Dance” with Richard Gere and “Alfie” alongside Marisa Tomei and Jude Law.
Susan Sarandon has also appeared in various TV shows, including “Friends,” “Mad TV,” “Malcolm in the Middle,” “Rescue Me,” “Chappelle’s Show” and “Saturday Night Live.” She has also lent her voice to two episodes of “The Simpsons” as herself and provided the narrations to over two dozen documentary films, most of which deal with social and political issues. Sarandon’s political activism can be seen on the installments of the PBS documentary “Independent Lens.”
In 2006, Susan Sarandon and her family participated in the UK TV series “Who Do You Think You Are?” wherein Susan and 10 of her relatives including her life partner Tim Robbins trace Sarandon’s Welsh family trees as they journeyed to Wales. 2007 was a busy year for Susan Sarandon; she hosted the lectures of the late Joseph Campbell entitled “Mythos,” joined the cast of “Middle of Nowhere” and worked on the film “The Lovely Bones.” Susan Sarandon’s latest film work is the 2009 psychological thriller “Peacock,” which also stars Ellen Page, Cillian Murphy, Bill Pullman and Josh Lucas.
Susan Sarandon has a daughter Eva Amurri with director Franco Amurri, whom Susan dated around the mid-1980s. Since 1988, Susan Sarandon has been in a relationship with actor/director Tim Robbins and has two sons – Jack Henry and Miles Guthrie – with him.
